Santa Maria - Murdeira
Murdeira was originally a small village mainly of farmers and fishermen. It was mentioned as “Mordera” on the 1747 map by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. From the late 1990s, a large private development led to the construction of a seaside tourist village in the region, called “Aldeamento Turístico da Murdeira”, which grew a permanent population as houses were gradually purchased , mainly by island inhabitants and some foreigners. The name now mainly refers to this semi-closed community.
